There’s bears out there
A short boat ride from the seaside town of Homer

The self-proclaimed Halibut Capital of the World, the seaside village of Homer is not a bad place to indulge in some of the finest, freshest Alaskan seafood. Looking a little like flounder, halibut flesh is sweet and full of flavour, best served simply with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of cracked pepper. Though it’s decidedly difficult to find a restaurant that doesn’t smother these delicate fillets with a rich overpowering sauce. The Homer Spit is a narrow isthmus of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay peppered with colourful galleries, alfresco cafes and restaurants along with the infamous Salty Dawg Saloon.

The Spit is also home to a bustling boat harbour filled to the brim with fishing boats, water taxis, ferries, tour and pleasure boats. It’s a mere 20 minute boat ride across the bay to Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge, tucked away on the shore of curiously named China Poot Bay, yet it feels like venturing to another planet. Barely visible from seaward, a handful of elegant character-filled timber cottages perched atop a heavily wooded wave-battered cliff create a delightful village-like haven. .
