Amalfi, founded by Roman settlers from Melphi was once the richest town in southern Italy and a Sea Republic. Summer festivals attract large crowds but in the golden days of autumn, life reverts to a gentle pace and Amalfi looks its best, a gem of a resort nestling crescent shaped at the foot of Mount Cerrato, framed by limestone cliffs. Anacapri has its share of designer boutiques but among the highlights is the chair lift gliding to the top of Mount Solaro, the highest point on Capri. Up on the slopes, farmers’ toil in the sun, gathering wild herbs or lemons in the grandiose landscape of Amalfi.
