Mykonos

It is a place in the Cyclades where the jet set spends their vacations, and also one of the most famous worldwide destinations. Named after the mythical grandson of Apollo, Mykonos is Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island in the heart of the Cyclades. Here celebrities and residents rub shoulders, and tourists have a whale of a time having fun or ruminating on the island’s history and tradition. The capital town Hóra is a place where you can stroll around its narrow marbled streets and gaze on the mainly whitewashed houses with colourful doors and window frames. If you are a history buff, go see the Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums and immerse yourself in Mykonos’ rich heritage. Visit an 18th century district Alefkántra, one of the most scenic locales which is also known as ‘Little Venice’ with colourful balconies of captains’ mansions overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Another historic town is Áno Merá with a 16th century church and monastery Panayia Tourliani. If shopping is your sin, then the glamorous Matoyánni Street with its brand name shops, charming cafes and stylish restaurants will be up your alley. At the lively waterfront, enjoy a relaxing time at waterfront cafes gazing at bobbing fishing on your tennis or play mini golf at Ayios Stéfanos,or indulge in beach volleyball at Ayia Anna, or get an adrenaline rush with sea parachuting or jet skiing at Eliá or Kalafátis.A must try local food is ‘kopanistí’, a soft cheese seasoned with pepper, usually topped on a round rusk spread with grated tomato, a favourite appetiser of locals. Entrees such as ‘loúzes’, cooked pork filet with spices, delectable pepper-sprinkled local sausages, and local oregano are great for meat-lovers. For dessert, partake in yummy local pastries, ‘amigdalotá’ (small round cakes with ground almond, rosewater and caster sugar) and honey pie.
