Once written off as an underdeveloped holiday destination, Yangon has since blossomed into a great spot for tourism. A melting pot of many cultures, including British, Chinese, Indian and, of course, Burmese, Yangon features unique British architecture from the 19th century and is an inspired mix of traditional and modern. Locals are still content to walk around in their traditional garments, called Longyi, and it’s easy for anyone to get lost in the sights and sounds of the local streets. Nature lovers will fall in love with the city’s natural views as well, including their sparkling lakes and lush tropical trees. For the indulgent, you have a few five-star hotel options, including the Parkroyal Hotel Yangon, which marries contemporary luxury with Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage; and the Chatrium Hotel Yangon, with its breathtaking views of the Shwedagon Pagoda, Kandawgyi Lake and Kandawgyi Natural Park.
