As October turns, the annual ritual of wind-down countdown starts. It is officially the family, fun and time out precinct of the year. In the northern hemisphere, with the greater population, onset of winter starts, the cooling of temperatures and probably minds, celebration, rejoice and reflection.
After the second week of November, there shall also be a welcome respite from the 24×7 coverage of the US elections. At this stage, the countdown is aimed more for peace and tranquillity rather than the anxiety and fear induced election for the leadership of the free world! Away from the stress, let us all head towards the serene beaches of Sri Lanka, the eclectic street shops of Seminyak, the snow bound mountain and valleys of Switzerland, the dynamic city scape of Hong Kong or submerge in the purity of Rishikesh.
In my opinion, Sri Lanka is the one destination that is under represented in the global scheme of holiday lists. The country is well endowed with wild beaches, jungle treks, culture that traces its roots to ages back, heritage architecture, fiery cuisine and world class hospitality. The infrastructure is rough around the edges, but so what, the task at hand gets done. The flights are pricy and so are the accommodations – as compared to its neighbors, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia; this needs to be worked on.
Tourism and the associated industries tend to be volume driven, the more the volume the more economical the base costs. With visitor count of 29 million in Thailand, 25 million in Malaysia,12 million in Indonesia and 2 million in Sri Lanka, the data points to hope for an upward trend of improvement in Sri Lanka. My recent Colombo-Bentota visit during the monsoon was remarkably comfortable. Despite the gentle drizzle over the three-days, the friendliness of the locals and the rough beauty of the region shone through. I have set Sri Lanka on my 2017 holiday schedule. Have you?
