The ‘M’ group of restaurants, with its star studded list of patrons that include Hollywood stars and members of British royalty, keeps reinventing to retain an edge amongst other local fine dining restaurants and pubs. With a presence in Hong Kong (Fringe) and Beijing (Glamour), they opened Glam, a sophisticated new dining lounge and bar at the Bund in August, 2015. Having earned for itself a reputation as being one of the classiest places to lounge and enjoy a drink or meal, what adds to the experience is that each of these properties is located at places that are historically relevant and socially vibrant.
Designed as a modern, flamboyant and sensual dining lounge, Glam epitomises modern Shanghai chic, with a retro twist. Entrance to the restaurant is through a glittering crystal waterfall. A comfortable mix of bespoke furniture and dark mirrored ceilings draw attention to art that is exclusively designed by famed cinematographer/artist/writer Christopher Doyle. A special Kissing Corner is tucked away in the back where Texan designer Brenda Houston’s huge overblown fluorite mural frames the Oriental Pearl Tower that looms in the background.
The menu, created by Executive Chef Hamish Pollitt offers a rich global spread. Season’s specials highlight local ingredients and recommended delicacies include Veggie Pakoras and Sweet Eggplant Pickle, Smoking Salmon and Salmon Caviar, Chilli Salt-Crusted Bean Curd & Black Beans, Thai Tah Tah, 18-hour Lamb Shoulder Rogan Josh and Ginger-Glazed Duck Dome Pie. A playful ‘Folly Trolley’ is stacked with desserts like sweet Verrines, Alfonso’s Exploding Mango Pannacotta, Carmen Miranda’s tres fash Iles Flotante, Josephine Baker’s Chocolat Mousse and Pavlov’s Dog.
For those wanting to linger over a glass of a dramatically rustled up cocktail, there is the vintage bar where` experienced mixologists concoct creations that go by names like Saffron & Spice, Fellini Martini, Evening Thyme, Fire & Ice, or Mrs Peacock’s Folly. At ‘M’ you get a rare treat of European cuisine and international savouries in an environment that creates the perfect mood for romance, interaction and casual socialising while getting a very good feel of Shanghai.
