The mountains of Kachemak Bay State Park dominate the vista in all their rugged snowcapped ‘look at me’ shamelessness. Walking trails weave like a spider web across Island Peninsula to Lost & Found Lake or along the High Trail all the way out to Moosehead Point where black bears are often spotted. At low tide Shipwreck Cove reveals a mysterious underwater world exposed to the prying eyes of guests ‘tide pooling’ in gumboots. Taking a guided walk below the high tide line, we poke beneath rocks, peer into isolated pools filled with temporarily stranded marine life and taste lettuce-like seaweed delicately draped across rocks like mermaids fingers
