Goa all set to celebrate its colour festival Shigmotsav 2014

Carnival of vivid colours, beautiful folk dances, Huge processions, costumes, drums and music – all these lasting for nearly a fortnight! This grand festival of spring, also known as Shigmo festival or Shigmotsav, the annual fiesta of Goa and is celebrated with dazzling grandeur.

Carnival of vivid colours, beautiful folk dances, Huge processions, costumes, drums and music – all these lasting for nearly a fortnight! This grand festival of spring, also known as Shigmo festival or Shigmotsav, the annual fiesta of Goa and is celebrated with dazzling grandeur. The Shigmo Festival or Shigmotsav will this year be held from March 16-30.

The parade will take place across various parts of the state. During Shigmo festival ripening of the winter crop is also included as a reason for the festivities. By the time it was dusk, artists displayed the martial dances like ‘Ghode-morni’ or the horse dance. Floats depicting the themes from ancient Hindu scriptures came to delight the crowd. Meanwhile, the visitors were enthralled at the grand celebrations.

Shigmo in Goa is essentially a festival of the masses, though it is celebrated under different names and in different ways in various parts of India, a release stated.

“Our focus is to preserve and promote the rich Goan art and culture and showcase it to the world. There will be lively décor, colorful parades and various traditional dance groups consisting of women and men dancers will give vibrant performances,” said Dilip Parulekar, Minister for Tourism, Women & Child Development, Government of Goa.

Processions are held with people throwing a red powder called ‘gulal’ and with flowers, flutes, drums, special dances like horse dance, artists in costumes of deities, artists enacting mythological events of Hinduism, colourful costumes, masks, jewels, crafts, etc.
