Growing up in the busy metropolis of Honolulu, my family would often escape the bustle of Oahu and “holoholo” to the island of Maui to experience a slower pace and reconnect with each other and nature. We’d walk under a dripping canopy of forest along a mountain pool, swim offshore along powdery sand beaches that seemed to stretch on for miles, marvel at the vastness and quiet of a volcanic crater, and simply savour life. Today Maui still offers her natural beauty and a place to reset a harried lifestyle. Here you can learn about the Hawaiian culture, taste the famous Pacific Rim cuisine and marvel in the natural beauty of the island, but there is so much more. Today’s sophisticated traveller is looking for the same connection as a kamaaina (local) from another island, and there are myriad opportunities to interact with the essence of Maui via cultural programs offered at hotels, active volunteer programs inviting you to locations most never see, and experiences to acquaint you with the unique and the sacred places.
