The history of perfume doesn’t only smell fabulous but also captivates with ancient and modern objects d’art as beautiful as they are mysterious. Jean-François Costa’s collection of perfumery objects d’art began in the Fifties and started out much as any collection does, with passion and a love of acquiring beautiful things.

It didn’t take long until his proclivity turned into the exotic and extraordinary. One-of-a-kind pieces include a French head-shaped bottle made out of opal glass with a hint of red for the eyes, ears and teeth from the late 17th to early 18th-century; and a bronze perfume vase with a dark green patina in the shape of the head of a soldier from the Hellenistic Period from around 3 B.C., probably used for funerary ointment and manufactured by Orvieto or Vulci, famed for their bronzes.

If you like unusual and beautiful, this is one museum that you probably haven’t heard of that should be on your list of must-sees in The City of Lights. Founded in 1926, the museum features lots of olfactory talks that will open your senses to a whole new world of art featuring expert perfumers, art historians, and curators. musee-parfum-paris.fragonard.com ◼
