Throughout George Town, the street art of Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic has also injected life into many historic spaces. The thing that is fascinating is just how tourists love interacting with this art with numerous ‘selfies’ being put on social media to generate even greater appeal. The heritage zone takes in most of the old buildings in historic George Town and guarantees that at least the original façades of what are in many cases, derelict buildings, must be preserved. Old shophouses are being converted into hipster cafés, stylish restaurants, funky bars and retail outlets and, more substantive buildings into boutique hotels and guesthouses.
