Venice, Kassel, Münster, and Six Minutes of Dark

A decennial art summer, golf’s two grandest weeks in one season, the longest totality on land until 2114, and windows that shut in January.

The most famous hotel in Luxor is shut. The Winter Palace, the hotel where the world first learned that Howard Carter had found Tutankhamun’s tomb, closed in early 2026 for a full restoration. It is scheduled to reopen as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace in July 2027, weeks before the moon puts the city into six minutes of darkness. In St Andrews, the hotel beside the 18th fairway is renamed and becomes the official address of The 155th Open. In Cape Town, more than a million people ask for Cricket World Cup tickets in under three days.

Three continents, one pattern. The great moments of 2027 were fixed years ago, and the rooms that put you closest to them are going this winter, mostly to people who decide in January. The scarce thing in 2027 is the date itself. Here is the year, read in the order you will live it.

6 February 2027. Lunar New Year opens the Year of the Goat. Rachel Owens covers it in full elsewhere in this issue. If it is in your diary, it should already be in your bookings.

22 and 28 March 2027. Holi lands on a Monday and Easter Sunday follows six days later, so one spring trip holds both. The rarity is arithmetic. In 2028, Holi falls on 11 March and Easter on 16 April, five weeks apart. Mauritius is where the two calendars share an island, with Holi colour in the Hindu villages of the north and Easter Mass in Port Louis. One&Only Le Saint Géran gives three generations a peninsula to themselves between the two. The week runs into international school holidays, so the family villas go first. Settle it by the end of January.

8 May to 21 November 2027. Biennale Architettura, Venice. Wang Shu, the 2012 Pritzker laureate, and Lu Wenyu of Amateur Architecture Studio lead the 20th edition. They are the first Chinese architects to direct it, under the title Do Architecture. Their buildings are made from salvaged brick and tile rescued from demolished villages. Expect an exhibition that argues for craft, reuse and slowness, set in a city that is the original case study. Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel, on Giudecca, keeps its own launch across the basin, the most useful thing you can own in Venice during preview week. The previews on 6 and 7 May are the days the architects themselves walk the Arsenale, and the rooms for them should be held by January. If you are taking the whole summer route, keep a second Venice stay for early June.

12 June to 19 September 2027. documenta 16, Kassel. The exhibition has returned every five years since 1955, and this edition is directed by Naomi Beckwith of New York’s Guggenheim with an all-women core team. Kassel has few grand rooms, which is why they are spoken for early. Schlosshotel Kassel sits in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO landscape with Hercules watching from the hill above. Secure it by February.

13 June to 3 October 2027. Skulptur Projekte Münster, the 50th-anniversary edition. This is the signal the year is built around. Founded in 1977 by Klaus Bußmann and Kasper König, it happens once every ten years. Its works sit free and unticketed in the streets, parks and harbour of a Westphalian university city, and you come across them on foot, by bicycle, by accident. The collective WHW (What, How & for Whom) directs it: Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović, the first all-female artistic direction in its history. The first artists named include Hew Locke and Oscar Murillo. Münster has no palace hotel. The Mövenpick Hotel Münster am Aasee sits on the lake where Claes Oldenburg’s Giant Pool Balls have rested since that first edition, and waking up beside the founding work is the point. In opening fortnight the whole art world arrives in a city of cyclists, so make the reservation by February.

Now look at the dates together. Since 1977, every Münster summer has coincided with a documenta in Kassel and a Biennale in Venice. That is the decennial Grand Tour: 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007, 2017. In 2027 it runs again with a twist. After the pandemic, Venice swapped its art and architecture years, so this alignment pairs Münster with the architecture exhibition. The summer’s question shifts from what art looks like to what it is made of. The pivot is a single weekend. Kassel opens on Saturday 12 June and Münster on Sunday 13 June, under three hours apart by car, while Venice has already been open for five weeks. Take it in that order, Venice, Kassel, Münster, with a driver, and you have seen the decade. The next chance comes in 2037.

15 to 18 July 2027. The 155th Open, St Andrews, a hundred years after Bobby Jones won here in 1927. The public ballot has already closed, which leaves the R&A’s official hospitality as the way in. Its Signature package places you inside the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa, above the Road Hole, the most dramatic stretch of grass in golf. Across the links, Marine & Lawn Rusacks sits beside the 18th fairway and is now the championship’s Official Hotel. From its rooftop you watch the final putts and the walk over the Swilcan Bridge. Open week here is reserved years ahead, so decide now.

2 August 2027. The total solar eclipse. Totality runs about 6 min 22 s at Luxor and about 6 min 23 s at its longest in Egypt’s New Valley. Nobody will see a longer one on accessible land until 2114. Be honest about the conditions. Totality at Luxor arrives around 1 pm local time, in an August when daytime temperatures routinely pass 40°C. Plan the day around the heat. See Karnak at dawn, spend the late morning in shade with water, and give children and older travellers a covered place to watch and a cool afternoon to recover. A river deck solves most of this. The Oberoi Philae, with 22 cabins and suites, is the one to chase. If the Mandarin Oriental reopening holds, the Winter Palace becomes the most symbolic room in Luxor, so treat it as a hopeful second option alongside a confirmed first. Luxor’s rooms for that week are already getting dearer and fewer. Book this now.

The shorter alternatives are Tangier at about 4 min 51 s, Marbella at about 3 min 21 s and Cádiz at about 2 min 56 s. On Spain’s Costa del Sol, totality arrives mid-morning, around 10:45 local, before the heat builds, which leaves the afternoon for the pool. That makes it the family answer. One detail matters: Málaga sits near the edge of the path and gets under two minutes of totality, so stay west. Anantara Villa Padierna Palace in Benahavís has pool villas with butlers, and on clear days you can see the mountains of Morocco from its terraces. Commit by January. For the rarer way to watch, Allegra Voss’s private-viewing story is elsewhere in this issue.

17 to 19 September 2027. The Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, County Limerick. It is the contest’s 100th anniversary and its first return to Ireland since 2006. The official Ryder Cup Suites are already listed as sold out. For those who want to sleep near the noise, the Oceania Marina will be docked at Foynes on the Shannon, 30 km from the course, with golf by day and the river by night. Adare Manor itself is the prize. Dromoland Castle in neighbouring County Clare is the quieter, grown-up alternative. Either one should be settled now.

That opens the autumn arc, which runs south.

1 October to 13 November 2027. The Rugby World Cup in Australia, expanded to 24 teams with its first round of 16. The final is at Stadium Australia in Sydney, the ground that staged the 2003 final. The tournament arrives with the southern spring. Sydney’s jacarandas bloom purple through the knockout weeks, and harbour evenings are mild enough to eat outside. Capella Sydney, inside the sandstone former Department of Education building, puts you between Circular Quay and the Botanic Garden. Semi-final and final week is when the city fills, so plan for it by March.

2 October to 21 November 2027. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the final in Johannesburg on 21 November. It is the tournament’s first return to South Africa in 24 years. In its first 12 days, the ticket ballot drew more than 15 million applications from 142 countries. The public ballot closes on 21 November 2026. If that date has passed when you read this, official hospitality packages are the way in. The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa in Sandhurst is the Johannesburg address that matters, garden-quiet and minutes from the ground. The rugby final and the cricket final fall eight days apart, one long southern-hemisphere flight between them.

Antarctica, 2027 to 28 season. The best voyages are already being chartered. The expedition-charter story elsewhere in this issue has the detail.

Step back and the list becomes a shape. A spring double. A summer arc: Venice, Kassel, Münster, St Andrews, Luxor. An autumn arc: Adare, Sydney, Johannesburg. Every one of these dates was fixed years ago, and no hotel can add a room to a calendar day. So choose the two or three that matter to you, commit to them this January, and keep the rest loose. World Travel Magazine will keep watching the calendar through the year. In 2027, the luxury is the date. ◼
