One man’s ruins are another man’s dream.
Under the Tuscan Sun
One man’s ruins are another man’s dream. Literally. This is how Borgo Santo Pietro was born, out of the ashes of a crumbling cast off village amidst the mud of forgotten fields.
The minute Claus and Jeanette Thottrup made the discovery, a shower of bats came flying out of the bones. First, the couple thought they would turn the property into their home, but then the dream grew larger and took the shape of an exquisite boutique hotel.
This long, strange trip evolved into years of loving restoration of Borgo’s original and long-forgotten splendour, echoing the bygone era when the setting was a retreat of comfort and healing for pilgrims to rest and recuperate.
Once under the calming spell of the land, the Thottrups decided to table their original plans, opting instead to stay true to the past by incorporating local craftsman and artisans who knew the property.
The 13th-century building has been transformed into a modern country retreat with a heart for the past, set on 13 acres of beautiful gardens, stone fountains, and cypress trees overlooking the Valle Serena.
The beautiful Tuscan hotel includes a spa, housed in the old communal bakery, a swimming pool, a shaded gazebo, guest lounge, Wi-Fi, farmer’s market, bocce ball, tennis, badminton and basketball courts.
Exotic amenities include a cottage wool industry created by Borgo’s herd of alpacas. Long desired for its extraordinary softness and lustre, alpaca wool rivals cashmere for quality and long life.
Equally exotic, Borgo sheep’s milk is an essential ingredient in their upcoming line of natural skincare which brings together the healing properties of the hotel’s raw honey, blended by scientist and alchemist Anna Buonocore. Borgo’s alpaca herd is a big draw with the kids while the biodynamic breakfast is a wow for everyone.
