Not everyone is fortunate enough to be born as a royal, but the magnanimously refurbished Athenee Hotel, now a part of The Luxury Collection Hotel, will surely make you feel like one. The hotel grounds occupy the 19th-century Kandhavas Palace, the former residence of Princess Valaya Alongkorn, daughter of King Rama V.

“The Princess is highly regarded by the Thai people as one of the royals who has contributed to shaping the image of modern Thailand. The vision for the redesign of The Athenee Hotel has been to present and celebrate Princess Valaya’s passions such as chess, travel, embroidery, and butterflies,” said General Manager ChooLeng Goh.

All 374 guest rooms were transformed for absolute luxury, and an upgraded city-lagoon swimming pool is without a doubt the place for some R&R. The Athenee Hotel’s lavish redesign marries elements of Thai colonial style with stunning European details – the result is a modern opulent Thai classic that nevertheless retains the charm and grandeur of the fin de siècle original. plazaatheneebangkok.com
