The Alila resort offers easy access to the famous Hanifaru Bay UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, where guests can indulge in guided snorkel amidst the feeding manta rays and whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay is truly a sight to behold. From June to November, the South West monsoon causes a massive build-up of plankton in the bay, drawing hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks.
It is worth noting that diving is not permitted in the bay. The best time to visit is during the day when the sun reflects off the water and illuminates the creatures below. It’s an unforgettable experience to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal.
The island is close to Vaadhoo Island, where guests can witness the spectacular ‘Sea of Stars’ phenomenon. This natural light show is created by bioluminescent plankton and can be seen best from the shores of Vaadhoo Island.
