California’s island resort is set for a whole lotta dancing

This rocky island off the coast of Los Angeles is not just a place where wildlife abounds and beaches seductively lure you into relaxation – the people of Santa Catalina also know how to celebrate art and throw exquisite balls.

The 9th Annual Catalina Spring Art Fair will arrive on Easter Weekend from 30 March to 1 April. The art fair will put the spotlight on local and mainland artists, musical entertainment, crafts, activities for kids, and much more. The vibrant Crescent Avenue facing the Avalon Bay shall play host to this fun-filled art fair.

While you’re at it, visit the numerous shops lining the street or grab a bite to eat for a taste of local cuisine. Don’t forget to bring your long gowns and tuxedos too, with two annual balls lined up early this year. The 23rd Annual Conservancy Ball on 14 April at the Casino Ballroom is not one to miss with a scrumptious dinner, silent and live auctions, and lots of dancing! There’s no casino inside, though.

Later this year is the 16th Annual Avalon Ball where Dean Mora’s orchestra is scheduled to play music from the roaring 20s, so expect attendees to be in their best vintage or vintage-inspired formal attire. The 10,000-square foot dance floor calls for a divine night of dancing.

The Casino Ballroom in Catalina’s main city of Avalon is a sight to behold unto itself. Built in 1929, big bands used to entertain guests here, and with its restoration several years ago, its old-world splendour was dusted off and brought back to life. Its ceilings are as high as 50 feet, five Tiffany chandeliers, a vintage bar, raised seating areas with the dance floor in the middle, and an elevated stage makes the Casino Ballroom the location of the most elegant parties in Catalina and nearby islands.
