Some highlights include fantastic views of waterfalls and two underwater floors in the 336-room hotel

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, developed by Shimao Group and managed by InterContinental Hotels Group, will be opening its doors in the fourth quarter of 2018. The 18-storey hotel is built mostly underground—only two are above ground, while two are interestingly underwater–and spans more than 61,000sqm in construction area. The 336 rooms and suites all have balconies for guests to enjoy amazing views of waterfalls from the cliffs in the vicinity.

The hotel has succeeded in turning an abandoned quarry into a futuristic landmark, resembling a flying saucer making its descent into the quarry. 50km away from the city centre, the hotel is worth a trip to see the amazing design that was shortlisted for an award in 2009 at the World Architecture Festival. www.intercontinental.com
