The exquisite Bali Carlo House in Sanur

Carlo Pessina, a prominent furniture designer as well as Founder and Creative Director of CARLO Contemporary Handcrafted Furniture shows his Italian and Balinese life background in his beautifully crafted ornaments and furniture designs. With over 25 years of experience in consulting, designing and manufacturing original furniture for prestigious resorts and private residences, it comes as no surprise that his Bali home in Sanur is as exceptionally exquisite as the properties he furnishes.

This house and its interiors designed exclusively by Carlo himself capture an innovative interpretation of a Balinese house. The house is more of a hidden gem as on entering the gate, leaving a feeling of the unexpected. As you pass through the wooden doors of the main entrance, you unveil a lush garden with 30 metre tall coconut trees. In line with his signature style, Carlo uses natural resources native to Indonesia such as ‘palimanan’ stone for the floor and skirting around the walls and doorframes. As for other parts of the house, the flooring is further transformed with terrazzo, a material that reflects his Italian heritage combined with mother of pearl speckles in different colours and inserts of wood. The roof is made from ‘alang alang’ woven grass and bamboo frame, ensuring the house stays cool inside.

The Penida credenza made from brown coconut shells and white terrazzo is a welcoming feature by the front entrance of the indoor living room and the Bea coffee table created with light coconut shells and mother of pearl makes a striking statement, pulling together all the natural elements of the outdoor living room. No perfect house is complete without a pool, and so, the stunning pool house is one of the highlights of the home, enhanced by the elegantly edgy Maluku armchair finished with white pebbles forming a functional piece of art by the pool. The house itself is an exquisite blend of Italian design and Balinese craft.

Carlo’s strong sense of artistic direction and love for the cultural richness of Bali is quite apparent in all his creations. Every inch of house is spectacularly designed as a perfect fusion of contemporary and traditional Balinese style with an urban hint.
